Many of the trout fishing flies classed as dry flies have been around for many years some in fact hundreds of years. The traditional dries are still catching fish very successfully today and will probably continue to do so for many years to come.
The dry fly has been designed to imitate a fly trapped in the waters surface film and the wound hackles which help to give the fly more surface area to assist floating will also appear leg like to any trouts inspection. The art of dry fly fishing is a skill obtained with much practice, the presentation of the fly will determine if the trout is going to oblige or not so delicate cast is a must. Very often the colour of the pattern used must be matched to the hatch that is underway at the time.
