Another variety of the dry fly this is the parachute pattern. The hackle is tied horizontally to a central post of brightly coloured floss which aids the visibility of the small flies in the reducing light of evening or when the fly is being fished at distance. The umbrella form of the hackle helps the fly to float down on to the surface much like a parachute giving excellent presentation. This is considered quite a new style of dry fly but it was first seen in the 1930's in the USA.
