Trout are not fussy about the source of their food, aquatic is not the only food type devoured by these fish, terrestials are probably a greater percentage of the diet of the trout at most times of the year. They are always on the look-out for any food items on the surface and will eat many diverse items of food. These range from grasshoppers, ants, crickets, beetles, leafhoppers, caterpillars, spiders and snails so a representative selection of trout fishing flies should always be available for the difficult times when any of these items can take fish.
For British fly-fishers, Hoppers started life at Grafam Water in the late nineteen-eighties. The pioneers of this now widely accepted dry-fly style, apart from Andy Linwood, were Bob Worts, Dave Barker and John Moore. Once the method had leaked out, it was soon adopted by top fly-fishers at Bristol, for it was well suited to Chew Valley Lake. A whole series of Hoppers is now available.
