I am already thinking about summer and dry lines. The smuddler was a pattern originally tied by Greg Smith. Greg a native to Southwest Washington has used this pattern for decades locally with great success. It is the original skater that was later turned into an after dinner mint by a local fly shop owner. This fly will take fish skated, especially in boulder strewn rivers in the summer and still water fisheries alike.
The Muddler when fished on the surface will imitate a variation of terrestrial insects,as diverse as grasshoppers to wounded minnows. Underwater it has the appeal of a juicy mouthful of damsel or dragon nymph.
The Muddler Minnow was an overnight success when it arrived in Britain in the late nineteen-sixties. Grafam Water had just opened and was producing unforgetable fishing. Big Flies, which we call lures, were 'in'. Anything black, white or orange on a size 6 hook were taking those specimen rainbows and browns. The Muddler publicized by Tom Saville, soon became the new reservoir fly-fishers favourite. Its great versatility was that not only was it so buoyant that it floated, but that it could be fished on a fast-sink line. That was a great asset, especially with summer rainbows.
