Caddis or sedge flies (Tricoptera) are drably coloured coloured moth-like insects, which, like moths, are most often seen as adults towards dusk and into dark. They are to be found on all water types inhabited by trout and therefore make up a significant part of their diet. Adult caddisflies vary in colour from black, to almost white through various shades of brown are, by far, the most common. Size varies from micro-caddis at only 1/8 inch through to 1.5 inches long with the wings held low over the body in a tent-like fashion when at rest.
